How to fix the "Update Package Invalid" error
How to fix the "Update Package Invalid" error If your navigation system displays "Update Package Invalid" when installing a map update, it means that an issue was detected with the update files on your USB drive. The system stops the installation to help prevent data corruption or loss.
You can usually resolve this issue by formatting your USB drive, collecting a new device fingerprint, and downloading the update again using the Naviextras Toolbox.
1. Format your USB drive
First, format your USB drive to FAT32. This removes the existing update files and may help resolve storage-related errors.
Important: Formatting will delete all data stored on your USB drive. Make sure you have saved any important files elsewhere before proceeding.
On Windows
- Connect your USB drive to your computer.
- Open File Explorer > This PC.
- Right-click your USB drive and select Format.
- Under File system, select FAT32.
- Uncheck Quick Format.
- Click Start and wait for the formatting process to finish.
A full format also checks the USB drive for storage errors, although it cannot repair physical damage to the drive.
On macOS (Toolbox 4 only)
- Connect your USB drive to your Mac.
- Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities.
- Select View > Show All Devices.
- Select your USB drive from the list on the left.
- Click Erase.
- Under Format, select MS-DOS (FAT).
- If a Scheme option appears, select Master Boot Record.
- Click Erase and wait for the process to finish.
Important: Make sure you select the correct USB drive before formatting. Do not erase your computer's internal storage.
2. Collect a new device fingerprint
After formatting your USB drive, you need to collect your navigation system's information again.
- Safely remove the USB drive from your computer.
- Connect it to your navigation system.
- Start the device information collection process, also known as fingerprint generation.
- Wait until the process is complete.
- Remove the USB drive and reconnect it to your computer.
The USB drive now contains the information needed for the Toolbox to recognise your navigation system.
3. Clear the Toolbox download cache
Before downloading the map update again, clear the Toolbox's download cache to remove any previously downloaded update files that may be incomplete or damaged.
- Connect the USB drive containing the new fingerprint to your computer.
- Open the Naviextras Toolbox and wait for it to recognise your navigation system.
- Log in to your account.
- Follow the instructions for your Toolbox version.
Toolbox 3
Go to:
Settings > Advanced Settings > Clear cache now!
Toolbox 4
Go to:
(≡) > Settings > Manage > Clear Download Cache > Clear Cache
Clearing the download cache does not remove your purchased map updates or subscriptions from your account.
4. Download and install the update again
Once the cache has been cleared:
- Open Updates in the Toolbox.
- Select your available map update.
- Download and install the update onto your USB drive.
- Wait until the Toolbox confirms that the installation is complete.
- Safely remove the USB drive from your computer.
- Connect it to your navigation system.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Important: Do not remove the USB drive or switch off your navigation system while the update is in progress.
Troubleshooting: If the error continues
If you still receive the "Update Package Invalid" message after completing the steps above, try the following:
- Use a different USB drive. The original drive may have storage errors that formatting could not resolve.
- Try a different computer. This can help rule out problems with the original computer or its USB ports.
- Repeat the process. Generate a new fingerprint, clear the Toolbox download cache, and download the update again.
If the error continues, our support team can help investigate the issue.
5. Prepare the Synctool folder for support
The synctool folder contains information that can help us investigate the synchronisation issue.
Important: Please collect a fresh fingerprint from your navigation system and copy the Synctool folder before reconnecting the USB drive to the Toolbox.
- Connect your USB drive to your navigation system and collect its information again.
- Remove the USB drive and connect it to your computer.
- Open File Explorer on Windows or Finder on macOS.
- Open the USB drive and locate the synctool folder.
- Create a compressed ZIP file of the folder:
- Windows: Right-click the folder and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
- macOS: Right-click or Control-click the folder and select Compress "synctool".
- Move the resulting synctool.zip file to your computer.
Do not delete or modify the original synctool folder on your USB drive.
