How to fix the "An error occurred during initialization" message
If your navigation system displays "An error occurred during initialization" while collecting device information on a USB drive, the process may have been interrupted or the USB drive may not be formatted correctly. Follow the steps below to prepare your USB drive and try again.
1. Format your USB drive to FAT32
Your navigation system requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 to collect the information needed for map updates.
To format your USB drive on Windows:
- Connect the USB drive to your computer.
- Open File Explorer > This PC.
- Right-click your USB drive and select Format.
- Under File system, select FAT32.
- Uncheck Quick Format.
- Click Start and wait for the formatting process to finish.
Important: Formatting will delete all files stored on your USB drive. Make sure you have saved any important files elsewhere before proceeding.
A full format also checks the drive for storage errors, which may help identify problems with the USB drive.
2. Collect your navigation system's information again
Once the USB drive has been formatted:
- Safely remove the USB drive from your computer.
- Connect it to your navigation system.
- Start the process of collecting your navigation system's information, also known as creating a device fingerprint.
- Wait until the process is complete before removing the USB drive.
If the information is collected successfully, you can connect the USB drive to your computer and continue with the map update using the Naviextras Toolbox.
3. Try a different USB drive
If the same error appears, try using another USB drive.
We recommend:
- A USB drive with a storage capacity between 8 GB and 16 GB.
- Formatting the USB drive as FAT32 before use.
- Making sure the USB drive is empty before collecting the navigation system's information.
Repeat the fingerprint collection process using the new USB drive.
Please note: Some navigation systems have specific USB drive requirements. Always follow the instructions provided for your model.
Need help?
If the error continues after trying a different USB drive, we recommend contacting your navigation system's manufacturer or an authorised dealer for further assistance.
They can help check whether the system requires additional troubleshooting before device information can be collected successfully.
