Error Message: "The application failed to start last time"

This article provides guidance for resolving the error message “The application failed to start last time. Do you want to reset to factory defaults and lose all your POIs, tracks, and settings?” The steps below help you troubleshoot the issue while trying to avoid losing any important data.

1. Check if the SD card or internal memory is write‑protected

A common reason for this error is that the SD card or internal memory is locked or write‑protected.

1.1 Inspect the SD card

  1. Remove the SD card from your device.
  2. Check the lock switch on the side of the SD card.
    • If you use a microSD card with an adapter, the lock switch is on the adapter.
  3. Make sure the switch is in the unlocked position.

1.2 Verify file attributes on your computer

  1. Insert the SD card into your computer.
  2. Open Start → Computer or This PC.
  3. Under Devices with removable storage, open the SD card.
  4. Right‑click the main folder and select Properties.
  5. At the bottom, check the Attributes section.
  6. Ensure that Read‑only is not selected.
  7. If Read‑only is selected:
    • Uncheck it and click Apply.
    • In the popup, select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files.
    • Confirm with OK.
  8. Confirm again in the main Properties window.

If the SD card is not locked but the issue persists, continue with the next section.

2. Check the SD card for errors

The SD card may be damaged or may contain corrupted files.

  1. Connect the SD card or device to your computer.
  2. Open Start → Computer or This PC.
  3. Right‑click the SD card and select Properties.
  4. Switch to the Tools tab.
  5. Under Error‑checking, select Check now.
  6. Ensure Automatically fix file system errors is checked.
  7. Start the process and wait until it finishes.

3. Delete the save folder

The error may be caused by corrupted configuration data stored in the save folder.

  1. Insert the SD card into your computer.
  2. Locate the folder named save on the SD card.
  3. Before deleting it, make a backup by copying it to your computer.
  4. Delete the save folder from the SD card.

Please note that this step removes temporary files, saved personal settings, history, and corrupted data.

4. Restore a backup in Toolbox

After removing the save folder:

  1. Connect your device or SD card to your computer.
  2. Open the Toolbox application.
  3. Go to the Backup section.
