How to check and troubleshoot navigation SD card issues

If your navigation SD card is not working correctly or is not recognised by your navigation system, you can check it for write protection and file system errors. If the issue continues, restoring a previous backup may help.

1. Check whether your SD card is write-protected

Some SD cards and microSD card adapters have a small lock switch on the side that prevents files from being modified.

  1. Remove the SD card from your computer.
  2. Check the small slider on the side of the SD card or adapter, if present.
  3. Make sure the slider is in the unlocked position.
  4. Reconnect the SD card to your computer.
  5. Check whether you can access its files and folders.

If the card is not physically locked but still does not work correctly, continue with the steps below.

2. Check the SD card for errors

File system errors may prevent your navigation system or the Naviextras Toolbox from recognising the SD card correctly.

You can use your computer's built-in tools to check for these errors.

On Windows

  1. Connect the SD card to your computer.
  2. Open File Explorer > This PC.
  3. Right-click the SD card and select Properties.
  4. Open the Tools tab.
  5. Under Error checking, click Check.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the SD card.

If Windows detects errors, we recommend creating a copy of the SD card's contents, if possible, before allowing any repairs.

On macOS

If your navigation system uses Toolbox 4, you can check your SD card using the built-in Disk Utility application.

  1. Connect the SD card to your Mac.
  2. Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities.
  3. Select View > Show All Devices.
  4. Select your navigation SD card's volume from the list on the left.
  5. Click First Aid.
  6. Select Run to check the SD card for errors and repair them if possible.
  7. Wait until the process finishes, then click Done.

Important: Make sure you select the correct SD card. Do not erase or format it, as this may permanently remove your navigation data.

3. Restore your previous backup (if available)

If you created a backup before the issue appeared, restoring it may help recover missing or damaged navigation files.

  1. Connect your navigation SD card to your computer.
  2. Open the Naviextras Toolbox.
  3. Wait for the Toolbox to recognise your navigation system.
  4. Open the Restore or backup management section, depending on your Toolbox version.
  5. Select a backup created before the issue first appeared.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your navigation data.
  7. Wait until the restoration is complete.

Important: Restoring a backup may replace your current navigation data and settings with those saved at the time of the backup.

Not all navigation systems support backup creation. If you do not have a backup or the Toolbox does not offer this feature, continue with the next step.

4. Check whether the SD card is recognised

Once you have completed the checks:

  1. Safely remove the SD card from your computer.
  2. Insert it back into your navigation system.
  3. Start the navigation.
  4. Check whether the SD card is now recognised and the navigation starts correctly.

If the problem continues, the SD card may be damaged or may require further assistance.

Need help?

If your SD card is recognised by your computer but not by the Toolbox, click the Contact us button at the top of the page for further assistance.

Please include:

  • The brand and model of your navigation system
  • A short description of the problem
  • A screenshot of any error message, if available
  • The steps you have already tried

If the SD card is physically damaged, cannot be accessed by your computer, or needs to be replaced, please contact your navigation system's manufacturer or an authorised dealer.

Please note: Most navigation systems require an original, model-specific SD card. Replacing it with a standard SD card may not be possible.
