How to fix the "Cannot open map files with your license" error

If your navigation system displays the error message "Cannot open map files with your license", it may be unable to verify the license associated with your navigation software or maps. This can happen if you are using a replacement SD card or if the original navigation files have been modified.

1. Check that you are using the original SD card

For navigation systems that use an SD card, the navigation software and its license are usually linked to the original, manufacturer-supplied card.

To check:

  1. Make sure you are using the original SD card supplied with your navigation system.
  2. If you have copied the navigation files to another SD card, remove it and insert the original card instead.
  3. Restart your navigation system and check whether the error still appears.

Important: Due to software licensing and copyright protection, copying the navigation software to a different or larger SD card will not normally work. The software must remain on its original, manufacturer-supplied SD card.

2. Restore your previous backup (if available)

If you are already using the original SD card and the error appeared after a map update, restoring a previous backup may help.

  1. Connect your original navigation SD card to your computer.
  2. Open the Naviextras Toolbox.
  3. Wait for the Toolbox to recognise your navigation system.
  4. Open the Restore or backup management section, depending on your Toolbox version.
  5. Select a backup created before the error first appeared.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the restoration.
  7. Safely remove the SD card and check whether the navigation starts correctly.

Please note: Backup restoration is not available for every navigation system. Restoring a backup may also replace your current navigation data and settings.

3. What if your original SD card is damaged or missing?

If your original SD card is damaged, lost, or no longer working, please contact your navigation system's manufacturer or an authorised dealer to ask about compatible replacement options.

Standard SD cards purchased separately cannot normally be used as replacements, even if the original navigation files are copied onto them.
