How to free up space on your device when the update is too big
If you cannot install an update because your device (either internal storage or the SD card) does not have enough free space, you can manage the installed content using the Naviextras Toolbox. This allows you to install only the regions and extras you currently need.
1. Using the Advanced installer in Toolbox 3
The Advanced installer option is available only in Toolbox 3.
To manage your installed content:
- Open Naviextras Toolbox 3.
- Connect your device.
- Go to Updates / Device → More → Advanced.
- You will see your content grouped by region, country or content type.
- For each item you can select:
- Update (install the latest version)
- Keep as is (no update)
- Remove (delete the content)
To view smaller files within a region, click [+] next to the region name for item‑level control.
2. Important notes when selecting content
Preinstalled content
- Preinstalled items are marked with the label preinstalled.
- These files belong to the original software package and are required for the proper operation of your device.
- Do not remove any preinstalled content, as this may cause your device to malfunction.
Recommended: manage content by countries
It is strongly recommended to use By country rather than By type when freeing up space.
Using the By country view makes the process clearer because:
- It shows a logical geographic structure
- It helps identify which countries occupy the most space
- It prevents accidental removal of important base files that appear under type
- It makes decisions more intuitive, especially when dealing with multiple regions
Focus on keeping only the maps and extras you currently need. Removed content will remain available for re‑download later.
3. Applying the changes
Once you have selected the content you want to update, keep or remove:
- Click Apply changes.
- Wait until the installation process finishes.
- When you see the message confirming that the process has been completed, click OK.
- Close the Toolbox application.
Why you should close the Toolbox
After finishing the removal and installation steps, Toolbox automatically checks:
- if any required maps are missing
- if there is still not enough free space
-
whether additional content should be offered
Keeping the application open may cause Toolbox to:
- attempt to reinstall removed items
- repeatedly warn about insufficient free space
- try to reinstall maps you intentionally removed
Closing the application ensures the process completes correctly.
4. If Toolbox reports insufficient space but your computer shows otherwise
Check for write protection
If Toolbox cannot write to the SD card or internal storage, the device may be write‑protected. Please check the following:
1. Hardware write protection
- Standard SD cards have a small lock slider on the side.
- Up = unlocked
- Down = locked
- Some microSD‑to‑SD adapters also contain this lock switch.
- Make sure it is in the unlocked position.
If the card is physically unlocked but still appears write‑protected, follow the steps below.
2. Remove write protection
Using the device Properties
- Open File Explorer.
- Right‑click the SD card or device storage.
- Select Properties.
- Check whether the device shows as Read‑only.
- If yes, uncheck that option if available.
Check for file system errors
If the card is unlocked and the issue continues, your SD card or device memory may have file system errors.
On Windows:
- Open File Explorer.
- Right‑click the SD card or device storage.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Tools tab.
- Select Check or Check now.
- Enable Automatically fix file system errors.
- Start the scan.
Windows will attempt to fix any detected issues.
5. Before removing any content
- Avoid removing any item marked as preinstalled.
- Always create a backup in the Toolbox before installing or removing content to prevent data loss.
- Make sure the device remains connected, and the computer does not shut down during the process.
6. Need help?
If you experience issues, please provide:
- Screenshots of the error
- A screenshot of the free space displayed in the Toolbox
- A brief description of what you have already tried
This will help us diagnose the issue more efficiently.
