How to free up space on your navigation system for a map update

If your navigation system or SD card does not have enough storage space for a map update, you may be able to free up space by removing maps or additional content you no longer need. The Naviextras Toolbox offers content management features that allow you to choose which maps to keep, update, or remove. The available options depend on your Toolbox version and navigation system.

How to free up storage space

1. Manage installed content in Toolbox 3

The Advanced installer is available in Toolbox 3. The following instructions apply only to this version.

  1. Connect your navigation system or SD card to your computer.
  2. Open the Naviextras Toolbox 3.
  3. Go to Updates / Device > More > Advanced.
  4. You will see a list of installed content, organised by country, region, or content type.
  5. Choose what you want to do with each item:
    • Update: Install the latest available version.
    • Keep as is: Keep the currently installed version.
    • Remove: Delete the selected content to free up space.

To see individual items within a region, click the [+] icon next to its name.

We recommend using the By country view rather than By type. This makes it easier to identify maps you no longer need and reduces the risk of removing important files.

Important: Do not remove content marked as preinstalled, as it may be required for your navigation system to work correctly.

Apply your changes

Once you have selected the content you want to keep, update, or remove:

  1. Click Apply changes.
  2. Wait until the Toolbox completes the process.
  3. If the installation is successful, the Toolbox will display the message "the requested action was performed successfully."
  4. Click OK to close the confirmation message.
  5. Close the Toolbox.

Important: You may see another insufficient storage warning after installation.

After closing the success message, the Toolbox may check your available storage space again and display another insufficient storage warning.

This is normal and can safely be ignored if you received the success message. You do not need to repeat the installation. Simply close the Toolbox to avoid getting stuck in a loop of repeated storage warnings.

2. Manage installed content in Toolbox 4

Toolbox 4 has a Manage Content feature that allows you to select which country maps to install or remove. This feature is only available for certain navigation systems.

If the Toolbox detects that there is not enough storage space for a map update, the Manage Content screen will appear automatically during the installation process.

You will need to select which maps to keep or remove before continuing with the installation.

How to use Manage Content

  1. Start the map update installation in the Toolbox.
  2. If there is not enough free space, the Manage Content screen will appear automatically.
  3. You will see a list of countries with checkboxes.
  4. Check the boxes next to the countries you want to install or update.
  5. Uncheck the boxes next to the countries you want to remove.
  6. Check the storage space bar to see whether your selected maps will fit.

If the selected maps require more space than is available, the Install button will be greyed out.

Uncheck additional countries until enough storage space is available. Once your selection fits, the Install button will become active.

  1. Click Install to continue with the map update.
  2. Wait until the Toolbox confirms that the installation is complete.

Please note: The Manage Content feature is not available for every navigation system. If your system does not support this feature, the Toolbox will not offer the option to select individual countries.

Troubleshooting: If you still cannot install the update

The following steps are only necessary if you still cannot install your map update after managing your content, or if the Toolbox reports insufficient storage space even though enough space appears to be available.

3. Check whether your SD card is write-protected

If the Toolbox reports insufficient storage space even though your SD card appears to have enough free space, check whether the card is write-protected.

  1. Remove the SD card from your computer.
  2. Check the small lock slider on the side of the card or SD card adapter, if present.
  3. Make sure the slider is in the unlocked position.
  4. Reconnect the SD card and try again.

4. Check the SD card for errors (Windows and macOS)

If your SD card is not write-protected but the issue continues, you can check it for file system errors using your computer.

On Windows (Toolbox 3 and Toolbox 4)

  1. Connect the SD card to your computer.
  2. Open File Explorer > This PC.
  3. Right-click the SD card and select Properties.
  4. Open the Tools tab.
  5. Under Error checking, click Check.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan and repair any detected errors.

On macOS (Toolbox 4 only)

If you are using Toolbox 4 on a Mac, you can check your SD card using the built-in Disk Utility application.

  1. Connect the SD card to your Mac.
  2. Open Disk Utility. You can find it under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
  3. Select View > Show All Devices.
  4. Select your navigation SD card's volume from the list on the left.
  5. Click First Aid at the top of the window.
  6. Click Run to check the SD card for errors and repair them if possible.
  7. Wait until the process finishes, then click Done.

Important: Make sure you select the correct SD card in Disk Utility. Do not erase or format the card, as this will delete your navigation data.

Once the check is complete, safely eject the SD card, reconnect it to your computer, and open the Toolbox again to check whether the issue has been resolved.

Before making changes

  • Create a backup in the Toolbox if your navigation system supports this option.
  • Do not remove any content marked as preinstalled.
  • Do not manually delete files from your SD card or navigation system to free up space.
  • Keep your navigation system or SD card connected throughout the process.
  • Do not shut down your computer until the Toolbox confirms that the process is complete.

Removed content can normally be downloaded again later, provided it is still available for your navigation system.
