How to update your Pioneer navigation system using Synctool

Some Pioneer navigation systems use a Synctool to transfer map updates between your vehicle and the Naviextras Toolbox. To update your maps, you first need to collect information from your Pioneer system on a USB drive, then use the Toolbox to download the update.

1. Before you begin

To update your Pioneer navigation system, you will need:

  • A USB drive with at least 8 GB of storage, formatted as FAT32.
  • A Windows computer with an internet connection.
  • The Naviextras Toolbox installed on your computer.
  • A Naviextras account.

You can download the Naviextras Toolbox from the Pioneer Naviextras download page.

Important: Formatting a USB drive deletes all existing files on it. Make sure you have saved any important files elsewhere before formatting it.

Not all Pioneer models use Synctool. You can check whether your model is supported on the Pioneer Naviextras supported devices page.

2. Collect your Pioneer navigation system's information

Before the Toolbox can recognise your Pioneer system, you must collect its information using Synctool. This creates a device fingerprint on your USB drive.

  1. Switch on your Pioneer navigation system.
  2. Open the Navigation menu.
  3. Go to Settings > Synctool.
  4. Confirm that you want to prepare the USB drive for an update.
  5. Connect your empty, FAT32-formatted USB drive to the Pioneer system. Make sure no other USB drive is connected.
  6. Wait while Synctool collects your navigation system's information.
  7. When prompted, safely remove the USB drive.

Your USB drive now contains the information needed for the Toolbox to identify your Pioneer navigation system.

Important: Do not remove the USB drive or switch off your Pioneer system while Synctool is collecting information.

3. Connect your USB drive to the Toolbox

  1. Connect the USB drive containing the device fingerprint to your computer.
  2. Open the Toolbox.
  3. Wait for the Toolbox to recognise your Pioneer navigation system.
  4. Log in to your Naviextras account. If you do not have an account, follow the on-screen instructions to create one.

Once your system is recognised, the Toolbox will display the map updates and other content compatible with your Pioneer model.

Please note: The USB drive represents your Pioneer navigation system in the Toolbox. You do not need to connect the Pioneer system itself directly to your computer.

4. Download and install your map updates

Once your Pioneer system has been recognised:

  1. Open Updates in the Toolbox.
  2. Check the available map updates.
  3. Select the update you want to install.
  4. Click Install.
  5. Wait while the Toolbox downloads and installs the update onto your USB drive.
  6. When the installation is complete, click OK.
  7. Safely remove the USB drive from your computer.

Important: Do not disconnect the USB drive or close the Toolbox during the installation.

If you have purchased an update or redeemed a prepaid code, the corresponding content will also appear in the Updates section when available.

5. Transfer the update to your Pioneer navigation system

After installing the update onto your USB drive, you must transfer it to your Pioneer system.

  1. Switch on your Pioneer navigation system.
  2. Insert the USB drive containing the downloaded update.
  3. Open the Navigation menu.
  4. Go to Settings > Synctool.
  5. When prompted to update the navigation content, select Yes.
  6. Wait until the system confirms that the update has been completed.
  7. Exit Synctool and safely remove the USB drive.

Your Pioneer navigation system is now ready to use the updated maps.

Important: Do not switch off your vehicle's ignition or remove the USB drive during the update. Your navigation system may restart several times during the process.

Keep the navigation update screen active while the update is running, as switching to another screen may interrupt the process.

Troubleshooting: If the update does not work

The Toolbox does not recognise your USB drive

  • Make sure you have completed the device fingerprint collection using Synctool.
  • Check that your USB drive is formatted as FAT32.
  • Try reconnecting the USB drive to your computer.
  • Make sure you are using the Toolbox version compatible with your Pioneer model.

The update does not appear in the Toolbox

Make sure your Pioneer system is recognised and you are logged in to the correct Naviextras account.

If you have received a prepaid code for map updates, you may need to redeem it first under Shop > Redeem code.

The updated maps are not visible on your Pioneer system

Make sure you have completed the second Synctool process on your Pioneer system after downloading the update to the USB drive.

If necessary, repeat the installation process on the Pioneer system.
